Nursery Rhyme (Morning Scene)
The kitchen rieks of rancid oil.
I've been up all night
baking cake after glorious cake.
It's the chocolate ones he likes best.
The sun is rising.
We blink at each other.
He does not understand:
Unlike me, he had a quiet night.
Still nothing stirs.
I hear my heart beat clearly now,
but I don't recall what it is
supposed to remind me of.
Finally, a neat shriek pierces the near silence, calling
me. Centuries from now I will be strong.

Nursery Rhyme
Sometimes we scream.Sometimes we hold our heads and our hearts
in front of us like candles
waiting to be ignited and infused.
Sometimes we stretch our legs and
lengthen our strides
preparing to jump and run
straight into the fire.
Sometimes we drink deep
from the cup of song
and we inhale and we exhale
until we are absolutely sure.
And then we curl up
into neat little packages
until our eyes and ears are shut and
the steady drip drip drip of the kitchen sink
lulls us to sleep.
